Uploaded Premiere Elements MPEG-1 file...

Summary:

Exported MPEG-1 clip uploads successfully to web site but when opened in Windows Media Player 11 (WMP11), only about the first half of the clip plays.



Steps to reproduce:

In Premiere Elements 3.0 Get media file from hard drive (MPEG-2)

Export work area portion (about 40 seconds) of MPEG-2 file to MPEG-1

Upload exported file to web site, about 9.5 mb

Check that whole file uploaded

Download the uploaded file via FTP and play it in WMP11 - no problem

Open the uploaded file directly in Windows Media Player 11



What went wrong?:

Only first 23 seconds of 40 second .mpg file plays



What should have happened?:

Whole 40 seconds should play.



Additional Info:

I used a cheap Chinese (ImTOO) ripper to take the same MPEG-1 clip from the

same MPEG-2 file and it plays correctly from the web as well as directly. I even imported the failed Premiere Elements MPEG-1 file into ImTOO and recoded it as MPEG-1. That file plays correctly from the web on WMP11. The Premiere Elements interface is vastly superior to the ImToo so I would prefer to be able to use Premiere Elements output directly.

Are these MPEG2s standard DV (not hi-def)?



Also, is your Premiere Elements project set up using the Hard Drive/DVD camcorder settings?



And did you use the Premiere Elements Media Downloader to get the video from the camcorder or did you use other software (like the software that came with the camcorder) and then import into Premiere Elements?



And, finally, is it relevant that you're putting this MPEG on a web site and then downloading it? Do you get different results if you just open the MPEG you've output? I'm not sure why you're including the extra step.

Here's an MPEG-1 file created in PRE7 from an MPEG-2 file and uploaded to www.Muvipix.com gallery. This plays back perfectly for me no matter how you look at it. It's 40 seconds long.

How's does this play back for you?

Here is additional information. The MPEG2s are standard definition. I shoot underwater video with a standard def camera carried on a remtely operated submarine. The camera composite video feed goes to a Pioneer DVR-640 H and is recorded to a hard drive. At the end of the day I transcribe the video to a DVD using the Pioneer. I put the DVD into my computer and use Premiere Elements 3 to save interesting bits to a Western Digital 500 gig hard drive as MPEG2 (.mpg) files. These are the MPEG2 files referenced in the initial post.



The MPEG1 output from Premiere Elements works fine locally. It is only when played from the web that I have the problem. See http://nauticvideo.com/red_anemone.html the ''Red Banded Approach'' clip for an instance of a truncated clip. For me it plays about 23 seconds until it is cached by the browser. After that it plays 40 seconds because in effect it is being played locally. I need to have the clips work from the web in order to promote my business.

The 40 second clip provided by Mr. Johnston runs fine from the web, full 40m seconds.



I notice that if I pause one of my 40 second truncated clips and click the WMP11 slider, it shows duration of 23 seconds.

There must be a more direct way than going from hard drive to DVD to conversion to AVI added to Premiere Elements output as MPEG, loaded to a web site and then downloaded and played, James. As I said, with all those conversions, you're only increasing the likelihood of problems.

I am still investigating. I just made a 40 second MPEG1 clip in Premiere Elements directly from the DVD brought ashore from the boat. Placed it on the web for public consumption, played it from the web with WMP11 and got 23 seconds of video from it. The same clip made in the tedious ImTOO program yields the full 40 seconds on playing from the web.

James, Your underwater video played back the full 40 seconds in Windows Media Player 11. There was some talking in the beginning and then things went silent. If that's the way its suppose to be then everything is okay.

The audio is just the conversation going on in the boat as the video is shot. It may very well fall silent for a time. It may be that the truncated playback is a problem local to me. Still, I tried playback on my wife's computer and saw the same issue. That leaves a modem and router as suspects and I find them pretty unlikely candidates since it is only the clips created in Premiere Elements that have this flaw. I have spent enough time on this small but aggravating problem. I will have to pass every PE clip through the little ImToo program before uploading.
