How to set audio hardware input...

Searched forum - hope I didn't miss solution for the following:

Using PE3 in Windows XPSP3

Tried for the first time to add narration to a project. Was using a stereo/microphone headset. Got nothing but noise. Could record in Windows recorder and Audacity. However, the microphone as part of the set would not work in Windows Audio Hardware Test Wizard. The set was using a sound chip on the motherboard.

A friend of mine has the same OS, motherboard and is using PE3. He too had never tried adding narration - but tried with a USP connected set, and was successful.

I removed my stereo set, and connected a USB set. To make sure all settings were reset, I did a cold reboot. The USB set worked in Windows Audio Test Wizard. I opened my project again, and in Edit/Preferences/Audio Hardware, clicked AIIO Settings. Unchecked the old set (Realtek) in both the Output and Input Ports area, checked the USB Audio Device, moved to the top of both lists.

Then tried to add narration and got the error message ''Your current audio hardware selection does not have any input channels. Please use Preferences%26gt;Audio Hardware to correct this problem.

Thinking that maybe this was a preset for the project and couldn't be changed, I started a new project, no video, just tried to add narration, and got the same message.

The entries in the columns in the ASIO Direct Sound for Full Duplex Setup menu for the USB Audio Device in the Input section are: 2048, 0, 1, 16, Yes

The only one of these that seems to be able to be adjusted is the second number - the Offset (Samples). The Audio Channels number is set to 1 and doesn't seem to be changeable. Suggestions?

Were both the problem microphones USB connected?

Because it works through your audio hardware, sometimes Premiere Elements has problems with USB connected microphones.

If you're having problems with a microphone connected through your audio card, it may be as simple as making sure your audio settings are properly configured. In addition to the ASIO settings, double-click on the speaker icon on your Windows task bar and make sure your microphone input is not muted and the level is set high.
How to set audio hardware input...
Hi Steve,

First set that wouldn't work was connected to speaker and microphone ports (not USB). No audio card - sound chip on the motherboard.

Needed to finish the video of my grandaughter paying volleyball to take to Houston tomorrow - so just settled for text rather than narratives right now. Next opportunity will be Sunday. Will double check Windows input %26amp; volumne then. Will post results then - thanks!

If you're connected through the sound card, you can nearly always get the microphone working by adjusting the ASIO and Windows audio, as I suggested above.

If not, there are a couple of alternate methods of recording narration, as detailed in my Premiere Elements 7 book. You won't be able to watch the video as you're narrating it, but you'll usually get much better audio quality than you will with most computer mikes:

1) Record to Windows Audio Recorder, Audacity or other audio editing program. You can then save the file as a WAV and import it into Premiere Elements.

2) Record into your camcorder and then capture from your camcorder as Audio Only.

I am having the same problem.

It doesn't matter what mic i use i still get the same error message.

Did you change your ASIO settings, as posted above?

if you are talking about the windows settings for the sounds then the answer is ''yes''

Beyond that I do not see any suggestions for the ASIO.

Mine are set at 2048 0 1 16 yes

Ihave no clue what to change.

thanks,

t

The ASIO settings for Premiere Elements are under Edit/Preferences/Audio Hardware, then click the ASIO button.

Right. Got that. But what do I set them to?

The correct setting of course.

And only you can know that, since I can't see your computer or where you've plugged your microphone in. (BTW, USB microphones won't work with the program.)

When working with Audio in most NLE's, i.e. Premiere Elements, or Pro, there are basically three areas that can affect how the Audio is handled on one's system. First, there is the Sound settings in Windows (from Control Panel). Next, the Audio card/chip probably/possibly has a console to make settings at the card/chip level. Last, and these are really two locations, but I'm only counting them as one since they are both in the NLE - Edit%26gt;Preferences%26gt;Audio %26amp; Audio Hardware. This is where Steve is referring to. Check all settings, and I'd suggest doing so in the order that I listed them above: OS, Audio card, then Premiere. A Mute, or by-pass in the first two, can override the settings in Premiere, and you may have its setting correct, but still not be able to effectively use your hardware.

The exact settings chosen will depend on the exact hardware that is properly installed. Without knowing all of your hardware and other settings elsewhere, one cannot give you a definitive answer. Ideally, in the settings drop-downs, you *should* see your hardware listed. Look closely, as these can be a bit cryptic.

If you are still unable to get your hardware working properly, a fourth place to look would be Control Panel%26gt;System%26gt;Hardware%26gt;Device Manager for your Audio hardware. Check that Device Manager sees your hardware, and that it is working properly.

If all is set up properly, but still not working, report back with exact specs on your system, including all of your Audio hardware. There are possibly some more steps that can be taken. I will not mention them now, as they *should not* be needed. If you do need further assistance, please list every option in all of the drop-down lists from Premiere, so we can know what your choices are.

Good luck,

Hunt

Pre. Elem. 7 crashes when choosing...

Though conversations with Adobe Support and information found in other posts, the solution to this problem was the upgrade of the QuickTime Player to the most recent version (7.6). I uninstalled the older version and downloaded / installed current version and the problem was solved. A document in the Knowledge Base (KB403276) references the same problem for Premier Elements 4.0. Thanks to all who helped.

It's such a good solution, we've made it a permanent part of our FAQs, Bill!

Glad the solution works for you.

Why Some MP3 Files Work & Some Do Not

A poster to the Adobe PP CS4 forum *might* have found a reason why some MP3 files will Import perfectly, but some will not:

http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b7b6fb/0

It seems that some contain ''album art,'' and these do not Import properly. While others do not contain this extra data, and work fine.

Might be worth noting.

I've always wondered why some do, but others, that appear the same to me, do not work. Out of habit, I just convert to WAV in Audition (or Audacity), so I never found the difference. It also explains why the MP3 files that I DO use (short SFX files), alwyas work perfectly - no album art.

Hope this helps someone in the future,

Hunt
Why Some MP3 Files Work %26 Some Do Not
Good find, Hunt!

And, of course, there's also the issue of digital copy protection, which is why you can't load any music downloaded from iTunes into a video editor without pulling up an error code.

But this MP3 issue you've brought up seems to be above and beyond that.
Why Some MP3 Files Work %26 Some Do Not
I had puzzled over this for some time. Many others have uploaded MP3's for me to test for them, but they always showed fine in Audition. Now, I may know why. Usually, a user would get a batch of MP3's to Import perfectly, but then have 1-2, that would not, no matter what they tried. I never saw the difference in Audition, where they played fine.

I only use MP3 for SFX work, so there would be no album art associated with the files. Also, I never looked at these in, say iTunes. Since these test files were not owned by me, all were immediately deleted, after the test. Next time, I'll try iTunes first, to see if there is album art. My assumption (same as Ron on Muvipix), was that the album art was just linked to the MP3 and was a separate file. Maybe not in every case?

Since I always convert any music MP3 to PCM/WAV in Audition first, I never had a problem. Now, I may know why.

I posted the link to Encore, here and Muvipix, as some users have experienced the problem with some MP3's. Could be that I now have my answer about what is different. Never thought of this, and never saw one problem with the ''bad'' MP3's in Audition. They looked just like the ''good'' MP3's.

Hope that this helps somebody,

Hunt

PE4 crashes when trying to add...

PE4 has just begun (I have used it for over a year without experiencing this problem) crashing every time that I click on the 'add text' button. I can't get it to crash any other way except by trying to add or edit titles.

I am using Vista on an HP pavillion with 2.0 Gb RAM and 1.8 Ghz core duo processor.

Thanks for any advice or help that you can give me!

Have you updated to the latest version of Quicktime as well as updated your other drivers, per the FAQs at the top of this forum?

Have you gone to Windows Update and manually added all the updates that don't load automatically?

PE4 crashes when trying to add...
When I have a large project (in terms of the no. of components and edits, not length) invoking the text editor is one of the two ways I am likely to get a crash or freeze. (The other is scrolling the contents of the media bin.) Perhaps you are making projects with more substance to them now than you were a year ago.

The work-arounds I use are:

1. Save your work often (particularly before invoking the text editor) and live with the problem, or

2. Partition your project into smaller chunks, edit them, export as AVI files and combine into a final project (with menu if desired) and burn or otherwise ''share''.

Many folks have reported crashes when adding titles in PRE4. I have also seen it. Whenever it happened, I would restart PRE4 and add the title first thing. It usually did not happen the second time.

It is a known bug that Abobe has addressed in PRE7. So a solution would be to upgrade to PRE7.

If you don't want to upgrade, then please use the workarounds Peter listed. I too used them in PRE4.

Adobe's NLE's (Pro %26amp; Elements) have problems with corrupt fonts. Much more so than, say Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign. A single corrupt font can bring Titler to its knees - or to the Desktop, as the case may be.

There are a couple of ways to troubleshoot this.

My first choice is to purchase a font ''fixer,'' like Extensis Font Doctor. As I also use Extensis Suitcase for font management, it comes with that package, but is also a standalone app. It will either repair a corrupt font (most likely it can), or will offer to delete an unfixible font.

Second is to Move (not Copy, or Delete) half of your installed fonts (from Windows Control Panel%26gt;Fonts) to another directory. This will uninstall half of your fonts. Test PE (or Pro) Titler and see if it still crashes. If so, then Move half of the remaining fonts to a different location. Repeat as is necessary. You will have your Moved fonts in several folders, i.e. First_Half, Second_Half, etc.. Note: there are some fonts that are System fonts, and should NOT be Moved. Windows is pretty smart in this respect, but do take care with System fonts - do NOT Move these.

Once you have done this in halves, and can get Titler to run perfectly, then you know that your corrupt font(s) are in the last folder, or spread out amongst the Move-folders.

Start by re-installing half of the last Move-folder worth of fonts, and test. If it crashes, then you know that at least one of those fonts is bad.

This is tedious and takes a lot of work. That is why I use a program, such as Font Doctor, which will survey your system for fonts. You may have to point it to several folders, but that depends on how your fonts are stored. It will fix, or delete (at your direction) fonts that are, and are not installed on the system. On my workstation, I have over 9,000 fonts, though only about 600 are ever installed at one time. First time that I ran Font Doctor, there were 20+ fonts with problems and all but three were fixed by the program. Those were safely deleted. Now, I do a lot of print design, so I have fonts from all over, collected during 20 years of work. Most systems will not have nearly so many, but all it takes is ONE bad one installed to throw Titler for a loop.

In *most* cases, this will fix Titler's crashing.

Try one of these methods, after you have worked through Steve's suggestions.

Good luck,

Hunt

PS the font crashes with Titler *usually* occur when one scrolls down the font list, though not always.

Full Screen Video For iPod Nano

Hi,

Did anybody successfully create a video clip to play in iPod Nano G4?

I used a preset that says ''iPod and IPhone - High Quality'', but the video is too small and leaves a black margin around it. I want my video to use the whole screen, but don't know how to do that. Can anyone help?

I don't change any advanced settings, but here is my export settings:

Presets: iPod and iPhone - High Quality

File Type: H.264

NTSC,640x480,30[fps],Progressive

AAC,128[kbps],38 kHz,Stereo

VBR,1Pass,Target 1.00, Max 1.40[Mbps]

Premiere Elements 4

Thank you!!
Full Screen Video For iPod Nano
Why not manually set the output to those settings, Mike?
Full Screen Video For iPod Nano
They are the settings that give me small video. I think I need to change something, but I don't know what to change. Can anyone suggest?

Hmm. According to the specs, you're doing it exactly right, Mike!

http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/specs.html

Mike,

May not address your issue, but Jeff Bellune makes some interesting comments to a poster in the P-Pro forums, where iPod was part of the needed Export options:

http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b7b7b8/0

Might be something of interest and/or help in this.

Good luck,

Hunt

Thank you folks, but still no luck. I noticed actually iTunes has the thick black margin around the video, too. I really hate it!!

Import into iTunes and sync with iPod are no problems.

I tried creating medium quality (320 x 240 pixels, which is exactly the screen size of iPod, according to the specs) but didn't help.

I found ''Fit to Screen'' in Videos %26gt; Settings in iPod so I tried turning on and off but that didn't help, either.

I really don't know what to try next.. Any suggestion appreciated.

It's sounding more and more like it's an iPod setting, Mike -- especially if even iTunes display this way.

Have you contacted anyone on an Apple or iPod forum?

Thanks for the suggestion. I checked Apple's iPod forum but didn't find a topic for the same issue.

http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1281

I thought about posting a message there, but realized that I do have the margin in Premiere Element, too. In the Edit Workspace, the screen's background is gray. I have the black margin inside the gray area and then my video goes inside it. I can clearly see this happening if I choose 50% or less from the right click menu on the screen that says ''Magnification''.

From this, now I think the problem is with capturing. I captured the video with Premiere Element version 2 and then loaded the project with version 4, which I use for editing, exporting or burning a DVD. I cannot use version 4 to capture my video from my camcorder because of some errors I cannot resolve. With version 4, video is never successfully captured.

The video is in .avi format and I think this is usual. Now I wonder if I have to specify or change any option to get rid of the margin.

There is no reason you should have a problem if you capture in one version and edit in another, Mike. Particularly if you are capturing from a miniDV over Firewire.

Avchd editing on 64 bit system

I am trying to edit avchd files written by a sony hdr-sr12 camcorder. they are 1080i in native resolution.

My problems are that when i just play them in premiere the video skips a ton. And when i try to export, the file will be ten times the size of the project file and i cannot even play it without it skipping frames!! and i am playing it in windows movie player. But i can easily play the original files in the sony avchd player.

I am running a 64 bit system on vista ultimate with a 2.53 ghz duo core processor, 4 gig RAM, Nvidia 9800 gs graphics card, and 2x 320 g 7200 rpm hd. I would think my note book should handle it.But when i over clock the processor (up to about 2.8 ghz), the video does not skip as much.

i also have a blue-ray drive, but it does not have a b-r burner :(.
Avchd editing on 64 bit system
Hi Andrew,

Your system configuration looks great, although the possible reason for the video skipping could be your system not being decently maintained. You could try cleaning up, making some more disc space, defragging and make sure while working with Premiere Elements for AVCHD, no other heavy application is running in the foreground. AVCHD editing as you might know is very complax and requires loads of processor and memory.

thanks

Daniel
Avchd editing on 64 bit system
I don't know about those specs, guys. AVCHD, as we say daily on this forum, usually requires a quad core processor for editing in Premiere Elements, as you can see at the bottom of this FAQ (from the library at the top of this forum).

http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b699a8/8

However, our Muvipix.com resident genius Robert Johnston did come up with this method of ''proxy editing'' AVCHD that uses a lot less resources.

  • Trouble importing large VOB file

Recently I've been trying to import several video files into Adobe Premiere Elements 2.0. The files are VOB files and each of them is around one gigabyte in size. While I have no trouble getting the files in, the video often becomes warped at times. It plays fine outside of Adobe, but when imported is often jerky.

I'm wondering if this is a problem with either the size or the format of the files. I figure it's one of these two things. If so, what are some free programs that could convert or shrink the files without losing substantial amount of quality (I realize quality may be lost, but I still want the clips to be viewable). Thanks for any help.
    Trouble importing large VOB file
Did you hit the Enter key on your keyboard to render the clips? If this does not resolve the problem then it may be necessary to convert the vobs to DV-AVI which PE2 works with natively.

See this FAQ on conversion: http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3bc4800e
    Trouble importing large VOB file
Try renaming the files to .mpg format and then importing.

    Ads Pyro problem

Just got an Ads Pyro yesterday to transfer my old VHS tapes to DVD. Problem is that the unit keeps dropping the connection while I'm capturing. Sometimes within a few seconds, sometimes a few minutes. Currently as soon as I hit the play button the VCR, it immediately loses the connection.

I checked all the tech support info and tried the dip switches in all positions, all switches down seems to work best otherwise PE3 just crashes. Done all the defrags, and shut down all other software, etc., but the problem still exists. As of now the Ads Pyro is unusable, in two days I've only managed to capture about 15 minutes of video which is acceptable quality but not all that good. Any suggestions??

Hi, Ron. You may want to post over at the Muvipix forum at http://muvipix.com/phpBB3/

    Ads Pyro problem
    Will do, thanks.

    Already responded with questions :)

Just so people know before they buy, it's been over two days and there has been no reply from tech support to any of my inquiries. It's now a Friday so it will likely be at least two more days before they get back to me, if ever. Let the buyer beware.

    See if http://www.scenalyzer.com/main.html will work

Download is free, program functions... but does put a watermark every few frames

Watermark can't be removed (as far as I know) so don't do any real work until you pay and receive the unlock code

Of course, if you have a hardware problem, no software is going to work

I have contacted ADS Tech support on at least 3 occasions for various products. The longest it ever took was 3 days. Once they do respond they are very good about sticking with the problem until it is resolved. Be sure that you have registered the product, if not they may not respond quickly if at all.

    Video Play Modules

When I try to install Acobe Premiere Elements 3.0 I get the message, ''cannot find video play modules. Try installing again.'' I do and it still doesn't work. I had it installed about a year ago but it's not working and not installing. any suggestions for this newbie? thank you!
    Video Play Modules
Make sure you've got the latest version of Quicktime.

(I'm assuming, since you had it installed a year ago, you're talking about on the same computer, same operating system, etc.)

    Combining small projects into one

I have finally taken the advice of the experts in this forum to create projects in small pieces, do all the editing, and then export the pieces to AVI and then combine those into the larger project for burning. In the small pieces, in addition to splitting clips and deleting some parts, I have been adding titles and transitions. Then I would add scene markers in the large project. Is this the recommended method?

    Cliff
    Combining small projects into one
Sounds good Cliff, I think you are on the right track :)

You can do some of the titles and minor editing in the Master project, just keep it to as little as you can.
    Combining small projects into one
Here's our FAQ on the subject.

    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3bbe608f

    Steve,

Regarding the faq, if I have titles and transitions, should I still uncheck the recompress option?

    Cliff

I would. It won't affect the file size of your output.

Recompressing simply runs the video through the DV codec. This isn't necessary if your original DV footage hasn't had any effects or transitions applied to it and, if you do it several times, it can hurt the quality of the original footage. But one single recompression probably won't do any noticeable damage.

    Steve,

    Um, I'm confused...

You say recompress (which isn't really ''compressing'' anything, just re-running it through the codec) is not necessary if you don't have effects or transitions. So far, so good.

But if you *do* have effects and transitions, is ''recompress'' necessary / suggested? Your response to Cliff (saying to uncheck to recompress) seems to indicate it isn't necessary then, either.

So... just to clarify... when WOULD you ever select (i.e. check) the recompress option?

(In my case, the source material is DV-AVI, if that matters).

    Sorry if I was confusing:

    1) If you're using DV-AVI video, captured over FireWire from a miniDV camcorder, that video will flow through your project and, if you output a DV-AVI, the video data will simply be copied by the program, virtually unchanged.

    2) Any non-DV-AVI video (MPEG, VOB, photos) or any video that you've added titles, effects, transitions, etc., to will need to be rendered by the program, which will output it as a DV-AVI. This video is unaffected by whether or not the recompress option is selected.

However, if you recompress the first type of clip -- the DV-AVI -- you're compressing already compressed video. The effect will be minimal, and my not even be noticeable. But, if you do it several times, you will see a slight reduction in quality.

So my recommendation, especially if you're working with DV-AVIs as our source footage, is to NEVER check recompress.

Although, in practice, it really won't make all that much difference either way.

    Got it. Thanks, Steve!

    Error message

    Hi:

I need your help in solving this vexing problem:

My computer is home built consisting of Asus P5K Deluxe motherboard, Intel Q6700 quad processor, OCZ Gold 2Gig RAM, Creative Audigy-2 ZS Platinum Sound Card, EVGA 8800 GTX Video Card and Win Xp Pro 32bit OS.

All drivers are up to date, Win service pack 3 installed, latest version of Apple Quicktime installed. OS and all programs installed on a Western Digital 150Gig, 10000 rpm Raptor and Video is captured via a Sony DV Camcorder (DV-AVI) to Adobe Premier Element 7 and to a Separate 750Gig WD hard drive. The only other program on this computer is Photoshop Pre-7.

The capture, editing, adding one title and two dissolve transitions to a 25 minutes project has been uneventful. I have made no DVD menus and added no music tracks. Attempting to make a simple DVD, I click on Share tab, open the disc menu, name the disc and click burn. Encoding data resumes and completes up to %93 the jumps to Compiling Media up to %93, the jumps to Burning Disc, up to %93, ejects the Disc with the error message: ''Unknown Error 2131042562''. The disc is recorded but does not play.

This problem is consistently repeatable. I have reinstalled the program repeatedly, formatted both drives and reinstalled everything from scratch a few times, updated everything that is updateable but the problem remains. I can render to a folder and use Nero to make a DVD with no problem! any help, insight, words of wisdom and experience is appreciated.

I apologize for this lengthy message, I tried to prove as much information as possible. Thanks

    Mike
    Error message
Sounds like a bad disc, what brand of media are you using and what speed are you burning at?
    Error message
    Hi Chuck:

It is not the Disc. I am using Verbatim and burn at 16. I had previously used Adobe Pre 2, 3, and 4 with the same computer and Discs with no problem. Nero has no problem burning a disc. I have also use a 4 speed.

Then my next suggestion is to update the DVD Burner firmware.

Here are some other suggestion and solutions from folks with the same error message

    http://adobe.groupbrowser.com/t120852.html

    http://adobe.groupbrowser.com/post900220-4.html

Same type of error from Roxio, so probably not a Premiere Elements issue. This is most likely a standard Windows Error Message or something from the burner firmware itself.

    http://forums.support.roxio.com/index.php?s=5dc7a6dcbd3c17667a363f75f8e37911%26amp;sho wtopic=38257%26amp;pid=203399%26amp;st=0%26amp;#entry203399

many recommendations I have seen regarding this error, if not fixed by updating the Firmware, is to burn to a folder and use another application to burn the DVD like ImgBurn (free). Burning to a folder and using another application to burn the DVD is generally preferred anyway if you will need multiple copies over time.

    If I could just add...?

In addition to being quicker and easier for multiple copies, burning to a folder also gives you another level of backup/safety.

The folder contains a DVD image that can be burnt to a new DVD if your old one is lost, damaged, etc. As long as you have any standard software that can burn a DVD, you're OK.

However, without burning to a folder, you will always be reliant on PRE to open your project and burn a DVD. If your project gets corrupted, or if future versions of PRE simply won't open it, or if you accidentally delete one of the assets, anything like that, you'll be up the proverbial creek.

Even though my Premiere-to-DVD works fine, I *always* burn to a folder, and think of it as a backup of my physical DVD.

    My 2 cents...

    Chuck:

Thanks for suggestions. I will try to find a firmware update for the burner which is a Plextor PX-800A.

By the way I don't have Roxio on this computer. Rendering to a folder and using Nero to make a DVD works fine. I have also tried +R and -R DVDs with the same error. I have quite a collection of coasters now!

    Mike

I tried but Plextor has no firmware update for this burner. The strange thing is that the same burner worked fine with Adobe Pre-7! As a last resort I will buy another burner.

    PE4 stop capturing

    Hi,

First, I'm not sure if my problem is PE4 itself or my computer. It's what I'm trying to find out.

I'm working with a dual-core laptop with to 2Go of Ram and XP Pro. I'm capturing on external hard-drives (running I think at 5400 RPM) with a camera plugged in my Firewire laptop input.

The problem is that when I do a long time recording (1 or 1 1/2 hour), SOMETIMES, PE4 just stop and I have to restart the program and sometimes even the computer.

I suspect the problem comes from PE4 because when I capture with Win Movie Maker, I never have this problem (the problem I meet with this one is that it sometimes freezes after capturing, when he is importing the video in the collection).

Is someone has an idea of what my problem is?

    Thanks
    PE4 stop capturing
I would try WinDV for capture, it uses very few resources.

Be sure to check all of your power settings and screen saver too.

Could be that your hard disks are set to turn off after 1 hour or something. Windows can't always tell that there is a process running and it shouldn't go into Standby, so check all of those settings to make sure that they are all set to 'Never'.

You can create a separate Power Profile for Windows just for capture if you want to and save it ;)
    PE4 stop capturing
    Thanks for your fast reply,

I will try WinDV. What I'm looking for is something really stable, because I'm recording classes, so I don't have ''take 2''. What I miss, I just miss it.

For the power settings, I was already at ''5 hours'' or ''never'', so it's not the problem. And since I only have this problem with PE4 and not WinMovieMaker, it should not be a Windows setting, but who knows?

    thanks,

I'll try WinDV and I'll continue to look for something.

If WinDV doesn't work I don't know what will. If you didn't have any problems with Movie Maker you would be using it. Might not be the exact same problem but could be the exact same issue that causes problems with both ;)

Hey I guess this problem can come because of 2 reasons:

    1: External hard-drives

2: You are recording in ''scene detect'' mode.

as I have done the same many a times and it was stable as well! You can check this as well. May be it will help.

  • Poor Rendered Video Quality PE7

    Hi All,

I've been running the trial of PE7 for a few weeks comparing against my existing copy of Pinnacle 10 and trial of Power Director. I love the interface and edit abilities, however when I generate DVD files and view them the result from PE7 is of a much lower quality than from Pinnacle or Power Director.

I'm using the default quality settings in each of the programs and viewing all with the same DVD viewing software (AVS Player). The originating AVI that was edited was captured using Pinnacle, but I imported it into PE7 and rendered a PE7 DV AVI for editing to make sure I was working with PE defaults. The picture seems to be more grainy and less vibrant in color with PE7. Of course having the big black ''PE7 Trial'' directly across the middle of the screen doesn't help with comparison (what possessed them to put the watermark directly across the focal point of the viewfinder?), but I'm pretty certain the PE7 files are not as good.

Is there some setting that I'm missing that would make the video from PE7 that much worse than the other two products? I can't believe that the Adobe product would be that much worse without someting I'm doing wrong or missing.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

    Dale
    Poor Rendered Video Quality PE7
If you're using an AVI created in Pinnacle (which can mean a number of things) you may not be comparing apples to apples.

Do a test with DV-AVIs captured over FireWire with Windows MovieMaker or the free utilty WinDV and import that video into each program. I think you'll find that, with an optimized source file, the program will more than hold its own, DVD encoding wise.
    Poor Rendered Video Quality PE7
    Dale,

The test of each program would be to author a DVD (use RW, so you don't spend a bunch of $ on test DVD's) and then watch that through a DVD software player on the computer, or on a set-top player to TV.

As for the display in the programs, there are a couple of things to look at. In PE, if your DV AVI Clip shows a green line, above the Timeline, it does not require Rendering. If it's red, just hit Enter, to Render it. If you Rt-click on the Display Monitor, you can choose Fit, or one of several resolutions - choose 100% and see if your display improves. Fit is basically a ''draft preview,'' sized to fill the Display Monitor, where 100% should show the actual detail.

It's been a long time, and several versions ago, since I last used Pinnacle, but I was less than impressed by its ''monitor'' back then. However, I am going both from memory and also this was on a previous laptop. Though it also had a 17'' monitor, the rez was way down (totally different GPU), than what I am now using.

I have Power Director on my workstation (dual 21'' CRT Hitachi 915's), and I see no difference between it's display, and that in P-Pro2, when I switch it to 100%. They both look the same to me. Do not have PE on the workstation, and do not have Power Director on the laptop, so I cannot compare those in an A-B situation.

Going back a couple of versions of P-Pro, Adobe went from DirectShow display to a common display engine for all of their programs. It has been my experience, when setup to 100%, that their displays are equal to, or better than, any program using DirectShow. This is for footage that does not need to be Rendered, or that has been Rendered, and is for 100%, and not Fit. I do not know if Pinnacel and Cyberlink still use DirectShow.

One last item to consider is the display settings on your monitor. Because Adobe does not use DirectShow any more, you could have differences there. I'd spend just a bit of time with the settings on your monitor, both in the Windows' Display, and in your GPU's utilities, to see if you can ''calibrate'' your monitor for best viewing of the Adobe display engine. In my nVidia Quadro 4500FX control panel, I have one setting for ''Print Work,'' and one for ''Video,'' and my needs fluctuate between the two. I also use Adobe Photoshop's Adobe Gamma utility to set things up for my print work. It is no longer included in the latest CS3-CS4 Photoshop.

moving a project to another computer

I am helping a youth do a project in premiere elements. We are having computer trouble, and are needing to move the project to another computer. I am not sure how to do this, as there are lots of files. Is there a simple way to transport a project to another computer? Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated. MKH
moving a project to another computer
Use the project archiver function (under the File menu) to move your project and its media files to an external hard drive. Then all you need to do is plug the hard drive into your new computer, launch Premiere Elements and link up to your project files!
moving a project to another computer
    Mike,

One little caveat: I have found that P-Pro's Project Manager (very similar to PE's Archiver) does NOT gather up SmartSound Assets, should you be using this feature. Those have to be copied separately, when doing a Project archive. Have not used PE's version, so do not know if that same little ''glitch'' exists. If you are using SmartSound Audio files, just Copy them, in addition to your other Assets, that should be gathered with Archiver. If you are not using SmartSound, you are free to ignore the above.

    Good luck,

    Hunt

    Mike,

Go to file menu and select project archiver.you will find two options there.'Archive Project' allows to include the media you used in the time line of your movie.'Copy Project' option allows you to include all media in your project.

Select one of these (I guess 'copy Project' would be apt for your case) and it will make a copy of your project.

now you can transfer your project on another computer.

    opacity values

I've just begun tinkering with the opacity setting in PE4 and was wondering.. how many of you use the feature to overlay clips, and is there a typical opacity setting that you use - or does it depend on the brightness/contrast/whatever of the individual clips?

I'd love to hear of projects where you used this.
    opacity values
Overlay? You mean like a double-exposure?

    Never.

I mainly use opacity for fading in and out or dissolving between clips.
    opacity values
I guess you could call it double exposure...an example might be of a large flag waving ''in the background'' while a military parade marches ''in the foreground'' or vice versa. My question would then be...what opacity values work so the two clips compliment each other - so both are pleasingly visible. My guess is the values vary depending on the clips.

Oh, I see what you're trying to do! That makes sense.

I'd put one clip on Video 2 with 50% opacity and the other clip on Video 1, below it, at 100% opacity.

You may want to tweak it a bit, but that should get you 95% of the way there. (No need to change the opacity for the clip on Video 1. Do any adjustments to the Video 2 clip only.)

    premiere elements freeze

When I use more then 10 minutes of video (MP4 format, 640*480 60bps),

    the software freezes.

My PC configuration seems to meet the requirements,

    AMD 64 X2 4200+ 2.21 GHz, internal memory of 2 GB.

    Regards,

    Erik
    premiere elements freeze
This is coming up a lot lately. It must be the popularity of cheap camcorders (Flip, for instance) that produce standard video in MP4 format.

You probably won't be able to use MP4s as a source file for Premiere Elements (the exception being AVCHD, and that only with the proper settings and hardware).

See if this FAQ, from the library at the top of this forum, offers a solution for you.

    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3c05aeab/1

You may also have better luck editing or converting your video with Quicktime Pro, available for $29.95 from Apple.
    premiere elements freeze
Run Task Manager while editing and watch the total memory. In my experience running PE on XP Pro (32 bit), if the total memory figure gets to about 1.4GB for any reason (and editing lots of MP4s will do it), PE can either crash or freeze or get very flakey. You can even get into a situation where it will let you add clips and then the resulting project will crash PE. If you or PE saved just before it crashed, you may find that you can no longer open the project without PE crashing right away.

I have found that if I have another program open in the background, switching focus to it and then back to PE can often free up memory for a while.

Note that this is independant of the amount of physical RAM you have in the system. A 32 bit OS hands out 4GB of virtual RAM per application and that is split 50/50 between the application and system tasks so PE only gets 2GB to play with, no matter what.

I am experimenting with Windows 7 (64 bit) and things are smoother but near as I can tell, PE runs in 32 bit mode on a 64 bit OS so it can't take advantage of the additional memory space the OS can make available. I think Windows 7 gives it 3GB instead of 2GB though. Too bad, this is the one application I own that could REALLY use more memory (and I thought that a couple GB would be WAY more than I would ever need for any application). Oh, and I'm liking Windows 7.......

    Major Capture Issues in PE7

    Hello,

I am using the educational version of PE7 for teaching video editing to students. The university is a laptop campus and everyone has ''identical'' laptops. Obviously they all have different software installed for personal reasons, but the hardware is identical. Specs below.

We are using Canon GL1 camcorders. The capture window in PE7 is has/had major problems. At first I was unable to get any device control, only the record button was available, even after configuring the device control for the make/model. I would hit the play button on the camera, then hit record in the capture window, then there was a delay of 5-10 seconds before it would actually capture. Stopping capture was even worse. It would take sometimes up to a minute to stop capturing.

I've increased the paging file on my laptop to 6GB minimum and 8GB max, and that really helped with the load time of the program, and I now have device control. However, I am getting delays in the capture window unless I disable ''Show Video during capture'' in the capture settings.

This is the first semester we've used this version (no problems with PE3!), but none of the students have had to use the program yet as we are still learning to use the cameras. I do, however, know of one student not in my class who experienced similar issues on her laptop using PE7.

Is there anything else I can do? Here are the system specs:

    Lenovo R61

    OS: XP Service Pack 3

CPU: Intel Core2 Duo 2.4 GHz, 2.4 GHz

    RAM: 1.96GB

Hard drive: 80GB (40GB free on mine at the moment)

Paging file currently set between 6GB and 8GB

Let me know if there are other specs that might be pertinent.

    Thank you,

    Zach

EDIT: I have very few programs running in the background, just the basics like wireless adapter and some system apps. I've encountered this with anti-virus (NOD32) running and disabled with no change.
    Major Capture Issues in PE7
If your FireWire connection to your camcorder is properly configured, you shouldn't have to press play on the camcorder and start the capture in the program. You should be able to control the camcorder with the program.

Do you have a FireWire connection to the Canon and can you stop and start playback of the camcorder from Premiere Elements?
    Major Capture Issues in PE7
After increasing the paging file, I gained device control (play, stop, ff/rwd, and scrubbing), so that is not a problem anymore. Now it is just an issue when I have video preview on during capture that it really slows down.

The firewire port works great. In fact, it's strange because I also have Premiere Pro 1.0 installed for other purposes and I have absolutely no problems running that program.

I have the same problem with my Samsung MiniDV camcorder. On the capture screen, only the record button is enabled. The only way to get the transport controls in PRE7 to ''release'' is by using my little remote to play back a part of the tape in the camcorder. I cannot stop the tape from PRE7, only pause it. I have to use the remote to stop it.

Ensure that you have the latest version of Quicktime.

Otherwise, it could just be a laptop thing. Laptops are generally designed more for portability and office work than for high-end, intensive things like video editing. I was on a Mac forum today, and even there people were recommending against editing video on a Powerbook.

You might be able to. Many people do. But the odds are against you.

    Zach,

I had similar problem but it went away after updating the video driver on my system. You could give that a try.

Out Of Memory - Serious Error'' 264...

Trying to make a video out of 264 photos (855 x 480) and a sound track from a Nikon D90 with the video removed. I get the many time mentioned problems of ''Out of Memory'' and then ''Serious error'' messages and then system has a hard crash. I used to be familiar with Prepiere Pro 1.5 but I retired and didn't think I would ever use Premiere again. Well - my church asked me to make a 20 minute video of our recent trip top the Holy Land. Si I bought Premiere Elements 7 but it is not helping my deadline. I have read where there may be too manhy clips or the size is wrong. Somewhere I read where 855 x 480 was correct for widescreen but the preferences say 720 x 480. Do I need to go back and adjust these settings? It 264 just too many? Should I go with 4:3? I'm on an XP with 2GB and plenty of disk space. Thank you in advance.
Out Of Memory - Serious Error'' 264...
Yes, 855x480 will fill a standard widescreen video frame.

But, assuming you've got a good 50-60 gigabytes of free, freshly defragmented space on your hard drive, I'd suspect that it's your audio track that's giving you trouble. You say it's from a video from still camera?

If so, you may have removed the video but, technically, it's still there. Just invisible.

Here's a solution that will work. Open another project and put that Nikon's video onto the timeline and the go to File/Export/Audio and save an audio only file.

If you use that for your soundtrack, your project should work much more efficiently.

Assuming you've got sufficient room on your hard drive.
Out Of Memory - Serious Error'' 264...
    Blacktop,

IIRC, the D90 outputs in MJPEG CODEC for Video, and I am guessing that it is MPEG Audio muxed (combined into one file) for the Audio. You *should* be able to Import that file into a program like Audacity and Export out only the Audio. Choose PCM/WAV 16/48 for that. Then, Import that WAV file into PE to use as your Audio.

If I'm wrong about the D-90's file output, you can also use several de-muxing programs to do the same thing, but Audacity is free and pretty good at handling the Audio portion of files.

As for your images, for 16:9, they will be 720x480 with a PAR (Pixel Aspect Ratio) of 1.2. If 4:3, they will be 720x480 with a PAR of 0.9. Your size will not really be a problem, though you will loose a bit of width (left, or right, or a bit of both), in a Project set up for DVD output. Not a biggie. The number of images should not be a problem.

I'll go pull specs on the D-90, to see if Nikon gives all of the specs, especially the Audio.

In the meantime, others might have a better method of extracting the Audio from your muxed files, using another program. Even if you delete the Video portion of your Asset, it's still in PE and is likely giving you the problem. Better to get an Audio-only file for use in PE.

    Hunt

Thank you for the responses. I will try Steve's option first. I will post the results.

Sorry guys but both options did not fix the problem. I was able to squeeze another minute of the project in but it now hangs up just like before. Any other suggestions?

You say you've got ''plenty'' of disc space -- but does that mean like hundreds of gigs of free, defragmented space or more like 10 gigs? You probably will need at least 50 gigs of free, defragmented space to handle all those photos.

You also might consider working on your project in parts. Five slideshows with 50 or so slides certainly stands a better chance of working than one of 265. The FAQs at the top of this forum show you how to combine the parts into one final mix.

    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3bbe608f

    Blacktop,

Have you tried to complete the Video portion (your stills only), without using the Audio, just as a test? Were you able to get that to work? If so, do a Save_As (change your Project Name to ''[Filename}_Video''). Then try to add your Audio. This separates the processes, and will point you (and us) to where the problem might lie.

Using Steve's approach (I like that better than mine with another Audio-only program), do this as a separate Project, just to extract the Audio from your D-90's MJPEG file. Export Audio, as a discrete file, which you'll Import into your main Project, as an Asset.

Steve also makes a very good point about the amount of free space needed. If you also have Windows' Page File on the same hard drive (HDD), and it's set to dynamic management, it too can grow exponentially. What seemed like a lot of free disk space can shrink in a hurry. For large Projects, I always have about 2TB of free space on my system.

Right now, in Premiere Pro 2, I'm working on a Project with over 1400 720x480 stills (all with pans %26amp; zoom), about 100 short .MOV files and 20+ .AVI files. Though I know I will now jinx myself and regret it, I have had no resource issues what so ever. I am also editing to/from an external HDD, and the only issue that I have is when loading the Project - it takes about 1 min. to sort out all of those links and load. Now, I do have 5 very large and fast internal HDD's and keep most of them free for scratch disks, Page File, etc.

Let us know if you can do the Video-only portion without a hiccup.

    Good luck,

    Hunt

OK. I believe the reason the suggestion from Steve to export audio only and then use these audio clips didn't work - was - I failed to delete the original D90 audio/video clips not only from the timeline (which I did) but also from the library. Once I did that I was able to complete the video and render it. I would still have to save every few minutes or I would get a warning but it never crashed again. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

    Blacktop,

Glad you are editing. Thanks for reporting back.

Out of habit, my workflow is to always extract Audio in Audition, and then Import only that. Personally, I like to feed my NLE and my authoring programs just the files, that make them happy.

This thread might help others, as more D-90's are sold, just like the Canon 5D MK II threads. It seems that these two cameras, and their CODEC's are giving NLE's fits in several different ways. I'm sure that both Canon and Nikon (at least I hope so), will issue their different CODEC's to the public, so that some of these issues will abate.

I get the same message when I export a photoshop slide show in PE7 to avi format. It seems to render fine until the last minute. It then crashes saying ''error compiling movie.Out of memory''

And does this happen, Vijaya, even if you take the advice posted above -- making sure your photos are no larger than 1000x750 pixels and working on your project in 10-15 minute segments -- and ensuring that you have at least 40-50 gigabytes of free, defragmented space on your hard drive?

    Hi

I have similar instability with a very similar size project, mostly slides, some video clips and audio from CDs. It wont render(out of memory) or burn DVD ( freezes after encoding), it periodically blanks out clips in scene line. But it always recovers the blanks after Save , close, exit and start again.

I have XP, 3GB RAM , lots of external and internal disc, and have set up virtual memory in line with Adobe guide 33161.

The only thing I can find so far is '' combine'' projects , but don't think thats available in version 3. And it would be very difficult to go back.

Also I was not able to import from Photoshop creations with more than one clip or if I did, it was not able to ''Break it apart'' without failing.

I am afraid I am only adding the the range of problems but I do this as its more possible diagnostic information.

Its not to do with audio as I had most of these problems before the video was added.

I am prepared to upgrade the product if version 7 supports bigger projects, as I am wasting so much time on work arounds and am now at a brick wall.

    Help

My project was created like this:

    a) Slide show was created in PS7 with pan %26amp; zoom transitions %26amp; audio (3 mp3 files).

    b) It was then sent to PE 7.

    c) After I emailed my problem, I did some changes.

    d) I did file, export, movie (like before) but this time, I chose microsoft AVI (don't ask me why!), then unchecked chapters under compile settings %26amp; unchecked recompress

It worked fine. The output AVI was 20 GB (that could have been the problem) But I burnt it to DVD %26amp; had no error %26amp; it works so well on TV - just as I wanted it to. I have not seen any other slide show look so well. So I am relieved %26amp; happy that I did not get the error message again. I had only like 39GB of hard disk when I created this AVI file.

    Good new, V!

  • Watermark in trial version

I am planning on upgrading my trial version of Premiere Elements 7 to a full version, but I am currently making a video in the trial version. Will the watermark still be on the video even when I have the full version? And if I do not render the video until I get the full version, will the watermark be there because it was originally edited with the trial, or will the full version get rid of the watermark? I'm asking because I don't want to have to start all over again if I get the full version.
    Watermark in trial version
Going to the full version will remove the watermark, prior to Rendering. Your workflow should be perfect, as you will not Render, until you have converted to full. Anything that IS Rendered, will have the watermark embedded.

    Stuck with PE4

After looking over the various threads, I guess I need to add one to get even more help. A couple of people made suggestions, and I have tried the things they recommended, but I am still stuck.

I am running XP32/SP3 on an Athlon X2 machine, 4G memory, oodles of disk space (74G free on my primary disk and 83G free on my second/scratch disk), and Premiere Elements 4.

I have a Humax Tivo with built-in DVD recorder. I have been saving shows by recording them to DVD, then editing out commercials so more shows will fit on a DVD (personal use only -- I am a cooking show addict).

All was well until recently, when I tried to get PE4 to load one of the DVDs and I got the ominous ''unsupported format or damaged file/the necessary components may not have been installed ...'' (and what sort of error message is that, anyway?)

I thought perhaps the DVR had gotten whacked somehow, but I got the same error when I tried to read in a DVD that had been authored weeks ago with PE4!!

Have uninstalled and reinstalled PE4, using proper permissions.

Have followed advice from this forum to update to latest video drivers and have also updated Quicktime. I have cleaned out temp directories, I have run Advanced System Care, I have talked sweetly to Premiere Elements...

Symptom is that PE4 seems to read all video chunks fine, but then burps when it tries to conform them (?) ... anyway, right after reading the last bit of the last video file, it spits out that singularly unhelpful error message of ''Unsupported format or damaged file/one of the necessary components may not have been installed ...'' for each of the files it read. (And what kind of error message is that anyway? It appears to be DOS-based.)

    HELP!! TIA
    Stuck with PE4
    Andrew,

I am assuming that your Humax TiVo is writing DVD-Video disks, and not DVD-Data disks. The check for this would be to place the DVD's into your burner/player on the computer and look in Windows Explorer/My Computer. If the disk contains .AVI, .MPG, .WMV, /MP4, etc. files, it's a DVD-Data disk. If it has Video_TS, then it's a DVD-Video disk. Might also have Audio_TS, but that would only be used in a DVD-Audio disk, and should be empty.

Now, depending on what you have, there are several ways to approach the editing. PE is pretty good about handling .VOB (the main files, along with .BUPs and INFs, contained within the Video_TS folder. However, sometimes, depending on what created these, and how, it will choke. One method is to copy the .VOB's to your HDD and try renaming them .MPG. This often works. Another is to use a 3rd party program to convert these to DV-AVI, the file format that PE likes. The FAQ's contain recs. for programs, and exact methods for using them.

Now, if your disk is a DVD-Data, it will depend on the exact format that the AV files are written in. Again, PE likes DV-AVI files best.

If you are getting Unsupported format, then it is likely that you are missing the proper CODEC on your system to handle the particular file type. G-Spot (www.headbands.com/gspot) is freeware that will tell you what the CODEC is, its official name, and whether you have it installed. You may need to Google on the CODEC name, download and install. PE *might* be able to use that CODEC, or you may have to use a conversion program, mentioned above.

Going from an existing DVD can involve 3rd party software to get things to work perfectly.

    Good luck,

    Hunt
    Stuck with PE4
    Thanks, Bill.

The disks are DVD video. As I mentioned in my first message, I get the same error condition when I use a Premiere Elements-created DVD as the source.

    gspot says:

DSH BDA MPEG2 Transport Information Filter ** File Missing:

Seems to be part of the Micro$oft Television Technology stack.

    Thoughts?

    Bump

Have you tried converting the DVD to a DV-AVI, per the FAQs at the top of this forum?

    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3bc4800e

Steve: Surely you are not recommending that I must convert any DVD source material to DV-AVI before I can edit it with PE4! Remember, this symptom occurs no matter what the source -- DVD from my Humax DVR, unprotected commercial DVDs, and DVDs authored by others from their cameras.

Not only am I recommending it now, but I always recommend it, Andrew. Even in my book (where I go into the reasons why).

But, if you've got a better solution, I'd certainly like to hear it.

So this approach produces a 25 GB file after a VERY long time (longer than Premiere Elements takes to create VOB files). I still need to edit these monsters to see if there is any advantage there, other than overcoming a feature failure in Premier Elements.

I wonder why no one is able to suggest a fix to Premiere Elements or to my video codecs to make PE4 work the way it is supposed to work...

To contact Adobe, click the Contact button at the top of this page, Andrew.

This is a user-to-user forum. Nobody from Adobe here. At least not on a regular basis.

%26gt;So this approach produces a 25 GB file

DV AVI is about 12 GB per hour, so you have a 2 hour project, right?

Disk space is cheap these days, so it is easy to have a spare 500 GB or even 1 TB free. Don't be put off by file size; that is what makes these files easier to edit; PE has less work uncompressing them while editing. Another advantage with DV AVI is that there is no inter-frame compression, so each frame is independent of the others, also making the file easier to edit.

DV AVI was the defacto standard for home videos for several years, and PE along with many other editors were designed around it. Some other editors are better at editing MPEG files, so if you must work purely in this format, particularly if you want smart rendering, then you should use one of them instead.

    Andrew,

Most NLE programs are built around a DV-AVI workflow. What often happens, beneath the hood (or bonnet, depending on where one is making auto references), is that the program does the conversion for you, or you do it outside of the NLE, before doing the Import.

The problem with the first is that a lot of the computer's resources are tied up making this conversion, and errors can easily creep into the process. Those large files are basically created in the NLE, but you just don't see them as readily, as with a 3rd party conversion.

For non DV-AVI material, I do a batch convert of all Assets in DigitalMedia Converter (my shareware program of choice). I load it up, check the specs. of my conversion, hit Convert and go get a cup of coffee. The files are usually done, and waiting for Import, when I return. Yes, they are large, ~13GB/hour, but they are ready to go. I just Import and begin editing.

Depending on the exact format that one's DVR records in, it might be possible to edit the MPG (or whatever the format is), but dealing directly with MPG material cna also be problematic. I try to resolve any problems, BEFORE I Import into the NLE. This is true for any myriad number of .AVI's, .MOV's, etc.

One thing that I do like about PE is that it is slightly more forgiving, than its ''big brother,'' Premiere Pro. I even use PE to tweak some AV files, BEFORE I feed them to P-Pro, 'cause it IS more forgiving. I still Export as DV-AVI from PE for P-Pro.

As has been mentioned, hard drive real estate is wonderfully inexpensive now. Video editing takes lot of it, regardless of which format one is working with. My workstation has over 5TB of internal hard drive space, and I then use about 30TB of external storage. One Project that I am working on occupies ~10TB, just to store the raw Capture files!

Give the 3rd party conversion a try. It will pay many dividends in the editing process.

    Hunt

Thanks, everyone, but now I have a new problem.

DVD converted to AVI results in a smooth-playing AVI (in whatever player I use). Premiere Elements edits the AVI fine, but DVDs burned with Premiere Elements have NO SOUND!!!

    What's up with that?

You need DV-AVI, not just any AVI.

Using MPEG Steamclip (per earlier suggestion here), I choose ''make AVI'' from DVD and then choose the following settings:

    Compression: Apple DV/DVCPRO - NTSC

    Sound: Uncompressed/Stereo/Auto

    Interlaced Scaling

    Interlace Chroma

    Dominance: Lower Field First

    No Rotation

    Zoom 100%

    X/Y: 1

    Center: 0/0

    No cropping

What settings should I be using to produce DV-AVI?

    Thanks again, all.

[And - for the record - I still feel that Premiere Elements should do this without third-party software.]

That looks about right. Here are the settings we've found that work.

    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3bc4800e

    Thanks, Steve:

I got the settings from that forum entry.

Now, why won't PE4 produce a DVD with sound?

I don't have Streamclip here in front of me -- but can you confirm that ''Uncompressed/Stereo/Auto'' sound is the same as ''MPEG Layer 3 to Uncompressed''?

    Options are

    Uncompressed

    IMA 4:1

    MPEG4 AAC

    AMR Narrow

    MPEG Layer 2

    MPEG Layer 3

    Pass Through

No Sound (I am assuming that is not a choice I want)

I'm sorry, Andrew. I'm not sure where to go from here.

Every indication is that you're doing everything right.

    Steve:

I suspect I am doing everything right EXCEPT using Premiere Elements 4.

In case anyone is still listening, I reinstalled my codec pack and that seems to have resolved things. I am now thinking of switching to an OS that can take advantage of my dual-core processor. Running MPEG Streamclip or PE4 in the background while I try to do something else on the computer is not only slow, but asking for trouble.

    Premiere Elements 4.0 Scratch disk...

Could someone explain to me what a scratch disk error is? Also, what has happened when you are in the middle of editing a project and suddenly all your clips go offline one by one? Where are they exactly?

    Thanks,

    Sarah
    Premiere Elements 4.0 Scratch disk...
    Sarah,

Most likely, the Scratch Disk Error, has something to do with the drive, where you have located your Scratch Disks (usually with Project). Things like an I/O error with that hard drive (HDD), or it being full. Check your Edit%26gt;Preferences to see where your Scratch Disks are located. Then check the defragmented free space.

As for the Clips going Offline, they are still where they were, when you Imported them. What has happened is that the link in the PREL file (the Project file) has been broken for some reason. Likely the same problem as with the Scratch Disk.

My guess would be that your HDD is getting full, but that might not be the problem. It could be mechanical with the HDD.

    Hunt
    Premiere Elements 4.0 Scratch disk...
Hi Hunt, thanks for that. Sorry to be an ignoramus - I am new to this! Can I move the scratch disks if necessary? What do they look like? What is an I/O error? Is there a way to reconnect the offline clips? And would clearing some space on the HDD solve the problems or just make them less likely to happen again?

I guess what I'm really asking is if you think we really have lost all the coursework for good or if something is retrievable.

Thanks for your help so far,

    Sarah

    Sarah,

The Scratch Disk locations are set in Edit%26gt;Preferences, and yes, you can move them.

I/O is Input/Output, and here refers to your physical HDD (hard disk drives) setup. If you, for instance, only have one physical (not partitions) HDD, and it's getting full, moving the Scratch Disks will not likely help. A full cleanup of your system *might* help, depending on what you are able to move off of your drive(s). The FAQ's at the top of the main forum page, have recommendations for system cleanup and optimizing.

Either freeing up more deftagmented space, or adding more HDD's will likely help.

In the Project Panel in PE, you can relink your media. In Pro, it's Rt-click (on the offline file) and ''Relink Media.'' Should be the same, or similar in PE.

Now, if you have not done much editing, since you last did a Save, one thing that might save some time would be to do a Save_As_a_Copy, to make sure you have a backup of your Project. Then, shut it down, without doing a Save. Clean the system up and add an additional HDD, if necessary, then Open your Project (not the Save_As_a_Copy version. If you have not moved your Assets, from when you Imported them, PE should find these and automatically relink. If you have moved them, but the folder structure is the exact same, PE should ask you to relocate the first Asset, and then automatically relink all of the rest. If it's still showing that the Assets are offline, I'd go to the Save_As_a_Copy version (it'll contain all of your edits, up until you did that particular Save) and then just do the manual relinking for each offline Asset. If this does not work, there is something likely wrong with the HDD, on which your Assets are stored. If that is the case, and let's hope not, then you might want to give us the full description of your computer, especially the setup of your HDD's, the I/O. Outline your Project, and where the Assets were located, when you Imported them. This will help users determine the next step.

Good luck, and sorry for the jargon,

    Hunt

Thank you so much. Will be up with the dawn chorus to head into work and will get back to you with my progress. It's me who should apologise for not being up with the jargon! Hopefully I'll get there soon.

Premiere Elements 4 Scratch disk error...

    Hi,

I am a new user to Premiere Elements 4.0. I have just started teaching Media Studies and am attempting A Level coursework, and am having numerous problems.

    1. We have been editing for some time. Today, when trying to access a project (all projects are stored on a designated drive of a school system), a notice popped up saying there was a scratch disk error and the project could not be opened unless the scratch files were put in the My Documents section of the school system. What does this mean? Is the project lost to us for good? I have a copy saved on an external hard drive and the same message popped up.

This occurred after editing successfully earlier in the morning.

    2. Projects which will open are appearing with all the clips offline. Where have they gone?! We have changed nothing since our earlier editing session today.

    3. In the earlier successful editing session, one group tried to capture some new material. All the new clips they saved appeared as being offline, and then their existing clips went offline one by one.

    Any advice / suggestions?

Thanks you so much to anyone who can help explain this.

    PE2 Data Rate too high

I am trying to burn a 15 minute video straight to the DVD. During the burning process (after rendering for about 10 hours) I got the following message: ''The data rate of this file is too high for DVD. You must replace the file with one of a lower data rate. -PGC Info: name=, ref=Apgc, time= 00:07:44:23''

I successfully burned the same project a week ago; my only changes were adding some transitions and a few stills.

My project is video (most converted from VHS), music (ripped from CD or itunes), Audio (narrative recorded at home) and stills (almost all reduced to ~300Kb).

I am in the middle now of trying to burn to a file, but the error spooks me.

    Any thoughts
    PE2 Data Rate too high
How are you burning it? Are you just using the standard DVD settings in Premiere Elements?

Also, do you get the same code if you burn to a folder on your hard drive instead of directly to a disc? Some cheaper media (Memorex discs, for instance) can cause these kinds of errors.
    PE2 Data Rate too high
    Ned,

Some place, you have set the Data-rate above the DVD-spec. of 10 MB/s for ALL Assets, or have spikes above that. Now, since this is for all streams, Audio + Video, something below 8 works best. Then, if there is a momentary spike, it falls below the threshold of 10. In your Export settings, this has been set to high, either by you, or the program. PE is pretty smart about spikes, but can get fooled by the Assets, sometimes.

Check your output settings. I find that a setting of ~7 max. is better for player compatibility, though PE does allow one to go to 8 max.

Where do I find the Export Settngs?

Go to Share tab, select file format and click on Advanced button.

Per the instruction sheet that came included with the program, you can't interface with that camcorder, as you could a miniDV. You need to use the Media Downloader, downloading the files rather than capturing.

Go to Organize, select Get Media and select DVD or hard drive camcorder.

And make sure your Premiere Elements project is also set up for video from a hard drive camcorder.
Having trouble importing video from my...
    Thanks for the help Steve,

You are right about the incompatibility of my camcorder....Adobe support suggested copying the file to my hard drive and changing the extension to .MPG...I did this and am now trying to import the video from my PC using the ''Get Media'' button and selecting PC files option. Whenever I do this PE7 freezes up on me and I still can't get my video into the program. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I'm not sure why Adobe suggested that. It's kind of an iffy move.

Instead, plug your camcorder's USB in and then, in Premiere Elements, go to the Organize tab, select Get Media and then select the DVD or hard drive camcorder option, as I said in my post above. This will open the Media Downloader, which you can use to download the file to your hard drive.

Thanks again for all your help.

I am still not having any luck. I went to organize, get media and tried these three options...''DVD Camcorder or PC DVD drive'', ''HDV Camcorder'' and ''AVCHD or other hard disk/memory camcorder'' each time when I selected my E: drive I got a message saying no valid files found. In the Media Downloader I am not seeing a hard drive camcorder option.

Thanks again I really appreciate all the help!

I'm not sure what to tell you, Joan. If you're using the Media Downloader properly, selecting the DVD camcorder option and then selecting your camcorder from the drop-down menu should work.

You can also try finalizing the DVD in your camcorder (it must be finalized) and putting the DVD disc in your computer's drive to see if that works.

    Making DVD Menus

I'm creating a DVD menu for a movie I've made. My problem I'm having is I can't fit all the buttons on just one page. As of now I just have a main menu page and a scene selection page. How can I add more pages?
    Making DVD Menus
If your project has more DVD markers on the timeline than there are scene links on a template, the program will automatically create the new scene menu pages for you.
    Making DVD Menus
As Steve says, the scene menu will be duplicated as many times as needed. If you have 8 scene markers and the scene menu has only 6 buttons, then it will automatically use another scene menu with only two buttons :)

By the way, there are some great FREE DVD Menu Templates at muvipix you might like to check out. Never can have too many ....

Check out the Products/Complimentary/DVD Templates page

You can add DVD menus through more options in DVD menu lay out. It would show above the monitor window DVD lay out.

Or you can just delete C:\PROGRAM FILES\ADOBE\PREMIERE ELEMENTS 4 and then run and registry cleaner (such as the free EasyCleaner or CCleaner). It's a clunky way to do it, but it gets the job done if you're dealing with corruptions, as you're seeing.

Can I back up individual image files to...

I created a Premiere Elements 4.0 Project including 3 separate photo slideshows. The slideshows were created in Photoshop Elements 6.0 and imported into my Premiere Elements project. I was hoping that when burning the project to DVD, my image files would also be individually backed up.

When I give the DVD to family members I would like them to have access to the image files so they can print or use them individually. I would like to do this in 1 single DVD rather than giving them a DVD with the slideshows and a DVD with the image files. I was able to do this with a previous DVD authoring program I was using, but I cannot figure it out with Premiere Elements 4.0.

Any ideas if this is do-able with Premiere Elements 4? (I am running Windows Vista Home premium SP1 - 64bit - 3GB RAM)
Can I back up individual image files to...
The best way to do it is to add your video and photo data to a DVD disk.

    To do this:

    1) When you Share your DVD, select the option to burn to a folder on your hard drive rather than directly to a disc.

    2) When the ''burn'' is finished, locate the folder Premiere Elements created and move copies of your photos into it. You can even create a new sub-folder called Photos if you'd like.

    3) Use your computer's DVD burning software (Nero, for instance) to burn the folders (particularly the VIDEO_TS and your PHOTOS folders) to a DVD disc.

Your friends will then receive both a playable DVD and a disc that they can open on a computer and browse to the native photo files on.
Can I back up individual image files to...
Thanks so much, I will do this!

Thanks for your help. I tried this. I burned the project to a folder (4.7GB) then to that folder I added a folder with my photos. So in the folder there was ''Photos'', ''OpenDVD'' and ''Video_TS''. I had 3 separate folders within the ''Photos'' folder, to keep the 3 slideshow photos grouped.

I burned the entire folder to a DVD using my burn tool. I don't even know the name of the software I used, but I think it was just the Toshiba burn tool. I dragged and dropped the folder into my new disc folder, then at the top of my screen clicked ''burn to disc'', I named the disc and chose from the formating options ''Mastered: disc can be read on other computers and some CD/DVD... no new data can be added...''

Once burned I checked it on my DVD player and now it recognizes only the individual jpg files so it does a generic slideshow of these images rather than my slideshow project. (no menu, music...) Putting the disc in my computer I could access either the files or the slideshow project, but not on my home DVD player.

I burned the folders to 2 separate discs, once dragging the whole folder to the disc and once opening the folder and dragging only the individual folders to the disc.

Please tell me what I'm doing wrong. thanks.

Remember, you don't want to burn the big DVD folder to you DVD. You just want to burn the VIDEO_TS folder and PHOTOS folder. Also, if you're using Nero, make sure you've designated your disc as a playable DVD.

    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3bbfa615

So I don't need to add the ''OpenDVD'' folder to my disc? Just the ''VIDEO_TS'' and my ''Photos'' folders? If I understand this correctly I will do this tonight. Thank you.

OpenDVD isn't used to Premiere Elements, so you can burn it or not. It won't make any difference to the playable DVD.

Ok, so I guess I did everything right, yet it still did not burn properly, so it must be the settings in the burning software. My Toshiba laptop is only a few months old and I'm a little confused about the burning software. It seems too simple with very few settings or options. It does ask me if I want a DVD-video or a Data DVD. I'm used to Roxio and Nero so I may install Nero and see if I can make it work.

Thanks a lot for your help.

    Exxport/Burn/Render Troubleshooting Tip?

I was just having problems with a project that was locking up while trying

    to burn a DVD.

I came up with a troubleshooting approach that someone else may have already

suggested, but I've never heard of it.

I tried to save the file as a DV/AVI, instead of a CD. Had this been

successful, I might have brought it into a new project and burned it that

    way, but..

The DV/AVI job also terminated with an error message. However it did create

a partial DV/AVI. After scratching my head a little while..

I brought the partial DV/AVI into the same project, and put it on a new

blank time line, above the existing project time lines.

The end of the partial DV/AVI exactly coincided with the beginning of a

clip, which I therefore decided was suspicious.

I was able to replace that suspicious clip with something else.

I was then able to burn the DVD.

Burning a DV/AVI seems to be a way to find out more precisely what in a

project is causing it to fail.

    Scenealyzer... Opinions Please!

I'm looking into Third-Party products that will do basically what PRE's Scene Split By Content does: analyze a DV-AVI video clip and look for changes in scene content (NOT timecode) and create separate clips/DV-AVI files.

It doesn't have to do capture functions - I could use WinDV or Premiere for that - so it could either do it on the fly while capturing or just look at an existing AVI.

I see several recommendations for Scenalyzer, so that's my current ''gold standard''. I've downloaded the trial, and it works with my setup and I'm happy with the results.

What does everybody think of this product?

*Are the AVI files it produces OK quality-wise (i.e. codecs and whatnot)

*Are there any better products, especially free, that are comparable? It doesn't have to be perfect at scene recognition - ''close enough'' is good enough.

I just want to know before I plunk down my $35 for Scenealyzer if there's something cheaper/better/etc.

    Thanks all!
    Scenealyzer... Opinions Please!
Scenalyzer is excellent. And, if you're capturing from a miniDV camcorder over FireWire, the quality will be identical to video captured in Premiere Elements because there will be no file conversion at all. The video data, in DV-AVI format, will be identical to what is in the camcorder. (This is why miniDV remains the standard for editable video for both the PC and the Mac.)

In fact, WinDV will give you identical quality to Scenalyzer or Premiere Elements. The only real difference is the interface and a couple of extra Scenalyzer features.
    Scenealyzer... Opinions Please!
%26gt;And, if you're capturing from a miniDV camcorder over FireWire

    I am. Thanks, Steve

So are there any other products that will do what Scenealyzer will do for cheaper?

I don't mind spending the $35 (well, actually I do since it's basically to work around a PRE7 bug...:() but I just want to make sure there's not a cheaper solution.

    Thanks!

    Cheaper than $35?

Well, this page shows you some of the key features of the program.

    http://scenalyzer.com/

Are those dealbreakers for you or extras? What are the features you feel you can't do without?

As many on this forum and on the Muvipix.com forum will agree, you just can't beat WinDV for stability, performance, ease of use and price (since it's free). But do you need something more than a good, reliable way to capture from miniDV?

I know, I feel like a cheapskate for saying $35 is too much. I guess I just look at it in the context of Premiere was $70.

Anyhoo... yes, I need more than capture. I've used WinDV and Premiere for capture... that's fine.

The scene analysis and creating clips/files from that analysis is what I'm after. This is all a result of another thread where we discovered an apparent Premiere bug where clips coming from split scene by content have no sequence numbers (a dealbreaker for my workflow!)

DVD burning works fine with windows DVD creation etc... all drivers up to date, tried to reinstall PE4, no change !

    Anyone could help ? Thanks
PE4 shuts down when clicking on DVD...
When you say all drivers are up to date, do you mean that you've gone to the Sony site and downloaded the most recent firmware? Particularly under Vista SP1, this kind of maintenance is vital. As is making sure you have the latest version of Quicktime and RealTek drivers.

    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3c057647/2

Other factors could include your system specs -- how much RAM you have (at least 3 gig, per our recommendations for Vista) and how fast your processor is and how much free, freshly defragmented space is on your hard drive (at least 50 gigs).

It also makes a difference what kind of video you're editing: what time of camcorder it came from and how you captured it, and, if hi-def, whether it's HDV or AVCHD.
PE4 shuts down when clicking on DVD...
I also had the same problem. I eventually found that having Roxio Easy Media Creator installed was giving Premiere Elements a fit. That doesn't mean that your problem is caused by the same thing, but something to consider. http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.3bc42ca8/3

Having Nero InCD installed can cause problems. That is not the same as having Nero InCD Reader installed.

hanks you, Steve and Robert, I have tried everything you suggested but the problem is still there :

    I have downloaded all updates from Sony, Realtek and Quicktime ;

    I've uninstalled Roxio easy media creator (which I don't like by the way !) and looked into ...system32 for the .dll files mentioned but did not find them;

    I have uninstalled PE and reinstalled after having shut down the antivirus;

I have opened PE whilst pressing the shift key.

My pC is a brand new sony vaio AR71S with an Intel core duo T9300 (2.5 Ghz), 4Go RAM, 500 Go HDD of which ca 400 free.I suspect the problem being between PE and the DVD burning device (drivers, microprogram... ?) since PE shutdown happens immediately when I click on the disk button.

Any other idea ? Thanks in advance.

    Did you try this?

    Thanks again for your help

The crash report would only mean something to the Adobe programmers. I would suggest contacting Adobe tech support directly.

Compiling Media invalid file path error...

    Hello,

I have updated to 3.0.2 Premiere Elements and the latest XP Home updates. I had 2.0 and it worked without any problems. I bought 3.0 and have had nothing but problems, I can capture, access files and put a video together but no matter if to file or to DVD I always get this error

    ''Burn DVD Progress screen''

    ''Compiling Media invalid file path''

then it all stops and nothing.

Any help or suggestions appreciated, I searched the web for this error and found nothing, when I search here I seem to get every Adobe product comes up but no premiere.

    Thank you

Are you saying that you're using exactly the same computer system and that you're editing exactly the same type of video as you used for version 2? I want to make sure we're comparing apples to apples.

Have you worked through the troubleshooting steps at the top of this forum? Usually, if you'll post your results in as much detail as possible for each step, we can diagnose your problems and recommend a workaround.

Compiling Media invalid file path error...
Yes, EXACT same computer system was used for 2.0

I tried using the same Sony Digital Handycam DCR-PC101 as used with the 2.0 software and now with the 3.0.2 software it does not work.

I try to burn to folder as well as DVD and both come up with the same error as in the above post. I've tried using only 3 small files to lower the size and the same issue.

Just so we know what we're chasing, Bob, when you say version 3 doesn't work, you mean specifically that you can't burn a DVD, right?

If so, I'll be interested to hearing the results to the troubleshooting steps I listed above.

Remember, telling us exactly what steps you're taking and what results you're getting is very helpful. Saying ''doesn't work'' or ''can't do it'' doesn't give us much to work with.

I started to do the FAQ to build a clean AVI file. I also re-installed the program, did an update to 3.0.2, defrag. Made sure I had 118gig space. All in order. Still I got the errors. Then I thought perhaps since this pointed to a path that somewhere a path was not correct. So I looked under Preferences - scratch disks - and found they all pointed to the D drive where I had some old Adobe files. It appears the 2.0 version worked when I had the files stored on another partition and 3.0 did not like this. So when I moved everything in Scratch Disk to the same folder on C: where I installed 3.0 things seemed to begin to work.

I tested it by burning to a file and then to an actual DVD and both worked well. I have a quad core chip.

Now the problem seems to be when I edit each end of a clip, ''the IN and OUT'' the in does not seem to be saved or rendered. When I get to the preview I can still see and hear date prior to the SET IN. I save, re-save and re-render and it still happens. However some clips it works fine.

Thanks again for pointing me in a direction so at least I can start to trouble shoot.

    Stop Markers Help

    Hi,

I'm new to the forum. I can't seem to find the answer to this problem. I am making a slide show DVD with Premier elements and can't find a way for the ''play the movie'' menu item to ignore the ''return to main menu'' markers used in the individual scenes. Of course from the scenes menu, each scene should return to the menu upon completion (and they do, because I put a stop marker at the end of each of them)... however, when I want to play the entire movie (one scene after another), the first scene, instead of continuing, returns to the main menu as it did in the scene menu. If I view a movie dvd from Blockbuster or whatever, the scenes return to the menu, BUT the entire movie plays entirely. I hope I am making myself clear. Logic says to me that the play entire movie should disregard the stop markers and continue, but the scene menu should act upon them. How can I achieve what I want from this product?

    Thanks,

    Marty

Premiere Elements doesn't support playing through stop markers. Stop markers can only be appropriately used to end ''bonus'' items.

I get around this limitation by using the donationware PGCEdit to modify the DVD files created by Premiere Elements. Others use Sony DVD Architect Studio to author their DVD's. It's $40 or less for the download version. Then there are the upper scale products.

    Martin Dorren,

Back in October, 2008 I posted a procedure DVD Menu Each Scene Return to Main/No Loss Main Play All.

    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b6bbf5

The procedure has always (many, many times) worked for me in several versions of Premiere Elements and for some other people as well who road tested the procedure. In a recent thread, the procedure came under a lot of back and forth about the use of these gaps between movies in the Timeline as potential source of errors. I have never had any problems following the procedure that I described. So, if you are interested, read through the discussions start to finish and make up your own mind.

As for me, I am in the process of following up on some of Bill Hunts suggested reading, but will continue to support the suggested workaround as described until I am convinced to do otherwise.

Back in Sept 2006, I came up with a similar solution:

    http://adobe.groupbrowser.com/post786288-3.html

With that method, you don't have to edit the menu template, the menus stay the same.

The movie is on the timeline twice. The first one is automatically linked to the Play All button. You wouldn't have any scene markers on that one, just a stop button at the end of it. So the movie plays all the way through without stopping until it reaches the end. Following that is the movie again, but with scene and stop markers.

And there is Steve's Tip on using DVD Markers
