converting avi files with dvdate

I just converted about 25 avi files created with a Flip Camera. I had had problems before with these files. They are evidently avi type 1 files. I found that the converted avi type 2 files were from 5 to 9 times the size of the Flip files. Is that normal?

I think you are probably changing the AVI codec when converting. Download GSpot from http://gspot.headbands.com and see what it says the codec is before and after conversion.

I have converted DV AVI type 1 to type 2 and did not have a file size change

But... what is the actual codec of that ''flip camera'' file?

Flip cameras shoot, I believe, in a high-def MP4 that is, technically, not AVCHD.

That can make them a bit challenging for Premiere Elements.

according to gspot, the flip file is AVI v1.0 with codec XVID. XVID ISO MPEG-4. File size 39,322,986.

The converted file using DVDate is DV Type 2 AVI with codec DVSD, DVC/DV VIDEO. File size 324,925,952. That is almost 10 times as big. Did I do anything wrong?

Codec of flip file is XVID, XVID ISO MPEG-4.

Gspot says the flip file is AVI v 1.0 with codec XVID, XVID ISO MPEG-4.

Actually, I can add these files to PE4 and produce and burn a video with no problem. The problem I ran into several months ago was that if I use the PE4 archive function, the archived project does not play the flip files. At that time, you guys gold me to convert them to AVI type 2, and that worked. The archived file was OK. I just don't remember if I experienced this much file size growth.

Yes Xvid is highly compressed and will give problems in PE. DV-AVI type 2 that PE prefers is much less compressed and file sizes will be noticeably larger.

I am glad I found this forum.

I have a Flip Mino (not HD) and I need to know how to make the videos work on Premiere Elements 7.

I hate to tell you, but I know nothing about Codecs, etc.

Can you help me anyway?

As we've often said, the challenge is the Flip cameras are made to just shoot and show or shoot and send to YouTube. They're not really designed to create editable video.

The FAQs at the top of this forum offer a possible solution though.

Thanks to Paul and Steve for help on how to handle flip files. I have seen several replys from members who say that they have had no problem editing flip files in PE. If you see my earlier message, you will see that I had no problem either until I archived the project using the PE archive function. After doing this the flip clips in the archived project would not play. Thanks to the experts in this forum, the solution that worked to me was to convert the flip files to AVI type 2, before adding them to the PE project, using dvdate. The only downside to this is that the avi file size becomes much larger.
